Main Couple: Connor and Tabitha
The Story: Connor and Tabitha are fire and water, or fire and TNT. When Connor brings the talented hacker in to help on a job, they discover that the hack was intended to bring them together. Now they just have to manage the chemistry between them.
The Sex: I had a blast with this one. I do love a plausible enemies to lovers story. And thank goodness this isn’t a boss/subordinate story. I’m totally over those. I find the power dynamics of the one’s I’ve read recently to be a little…unhealthy. There’s a lot of dirty talk in this one, and it explores that. In general, it’s pretty typical. Their relationshiop was a blast to watch. They have a history, but Connor clearly respects Tabby. There’s a lot of push and pull in the relationship that comes out in the sex. This is actually the second book in a series. Didn’t know when I picked up it, but you can tell that the history between them exists. it makes for a very bantery road trip. Tabby is fighting like hell against her attraction to Connor. He does a great job of actually getting consent before they moe forward with their intimacy. (Except for a kiss at the beginning of the story.) You’ve also got to love the trope of, “let’s scratch the itch.” It’s how they both justifying crossing the boundary between them. There’s mention of anal play, which might be considered kinky to some. But it’s not presented as kink. Also, they don’t engage in any.
Favorite Lines:
“And then she said I was hot, and my dick got so excited, I was worried I’d make a mess in my pants if I drove over a stray bump in the road. It’s like I’m a teenager again, all boner and no brains.” Chapter 8 You wanna make a long stretch of road trip exciting to read? Tell me all about the fantasy you’re having about the person sitting next to you. That will keep it interesting.
“The way he’s staring at me, the heat in his eyes, the hardness of his jaw, unmistakable need-I’ve never been looked at like this by a man.” Chapter 9 This was a turning point for Tabby. She let herself see that Connor was being honest about his attraction, and she didn’t immediately shut it down.
“It’s never been like this for me before, the pleasure of the physical act of sex overwhelmed by a sheer enormity of feelings.” Chapter 11 That’s when you know you’ve got it bad. You can have sex, and then you can have sex with feelings. The two almost don’t compare.
“I hold her tight against me with my forearms locked at her waist, my hands spread over her ass, and suckle her swollen clit.” Chapter 20 This was a fun image in the middle of a breaking hotel furniture sex scene. The scene is from Connor’s perspective, but Tabby has just changed the position so Connor goes for it.
Least Favorite Lines:
“Women.” Chapter 6 I just dislike when the actions of a person are then generalized as something every member of their gender.
Final Thoughts:
I totally loved this book. I think what made me read it a second time a week later, it that there’s a serious plot that has nothing to do with their relationship, but creates a heightened situation that is the spark to their powder keg. So many romance novels revolve around typically “feminine” situations. They have emotional stakes, not life stakes. This story is dramatic and has big world consequences. Fighting bad guys. Evil plots. Murder. They are both put to the test in their professional roles and it creates a strong mutual respect for the other. That opens the space for their romantic relationship to grow. It’s great to see a relationship develop from a place of professional competence. I think what made this books so exciting for me to re-read, was the time I ghot to spend in their brains., There’s a lot of dirty talk in the scenes between them, and a lot more happening between thair own ears. It made all the scenes around the sex so enjoyable.
Spice Level: 3/5
Kinks Explored: Some aggressive sex, but SM is mentioned in a less than positive light
Voices Heard: There’s a few diverse side characters, but most everyone is white, cis, straight.
Did I like it? Yeah. Read it twice. Thrice. Should I go read it again? I’m gonna go read it again.
